You've found it! A truly unique program designed to introduce under graduate students to the wide range of career options associated with the Dental Profession. UMDNJ - New Jersey Dental School offers all prospective applicants challenging and informative hands on dental experience. This is an intensive internship based at the New Jersey Dental School in Newark, New Jersey. Gateway to Dentistry is a 2-week interactive program that affords each participant a birds-eye exposure to the various aspects of the practice of dentistry.

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

  • Preclinical laboratory procedures;

The program is now open to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students and qualified recent graduates.
*Freshman students will only be considered for the May Program.

If you are not certain of your career options or even if you have decided on dentistry as a profession, "Gateway to Dentistry" will assist you in the critical decision making process with regard to future educational and career planning.

The Dental School is located in the University Heights Section of Newark, NJ. It is situated on a beautiful urban campus and is an integral component of the UMDNJ Higher Education System that includesNew Jersey Medical School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Health Related Professions, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, School of Osteopathic Medicine, and University Hospital.

With New York City just ten miles away, the opportunity exists for you to experience Broadway theaters, world-renowned museums, and top-name entertainment.

Program Dates:

January 6, 2009 - January 16, 2009  (Closed)

May 27, 2009 - June 5, 2009  (Deadline for receipt of application and all documentation: February 26, 2009)

January 5, 2010 - January 15, 2010  (Deadline for receipt of application and all documentation: September 24, 2009)

CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERATION OF ACCEPTANCE TO GATEWAY TO DENTISTRY*

Applicants Must:

  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from college.
  • Have completed at least one semester of college and taken some science courses
  • In-state and out-of-state residents are eligible to apply.
  • Students who have participated in the articulated BS/DMD program or who have been accepted to NJDS are not eligible to participate in the Gateway to Dentistry Program

PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING

  • Submit an on-line application form and required documentation:
    • a letter of recommendation from your Pre-Dental advisor or any basic science professor
    • a current official transcript from every college attended
    • Foreign applicants must forward a copy of their present green cards or student visa
  • Submit a non-refundable application fee of $50.00 (money order or check) payable to New Jersey Dental School. If payment of the application fee would pose a financial hardship NJDS will consider waiving the fee on a case-by-case basis, pending receipt of documentation.

Gateway Participants Must:

  • Be responsible for all personal expenses including:
    - Room
    - Board
    - Transportation
  • Carry their own health insurance
  • Wear sneakers at all times during the program
  • Long hair must be pulled back
  • $150.00 dollar equipment & materials fee. If payment of the materials fee would pose a financial hardship NJDS will consider waiving the fee on a case-by-case basis, pending receipt of documentation.
